How Serious is Car Theft? Not Bad Enough to Take Prints.
I have already told some of you about my lovely Valentines Day this 2010. It was horrendous – like waking up to see your car is gone bad. It was probably one of the scariest things that has ever happened to me. Here is what happened -
The night before Valentines Day was horrible, Bryan and I were both sick and we decided to take NyQuil to help us sleep. We had big plans to have fun the next day and to just let go of every negative thing we think about. We both fall asleep, and a good deep sleep at that.
The next morning was when the shit hit the fan – literally. Bryan woke up and instantly he said he had a bad feeling in his gut, and I always take that seriously because he does not mess around when it comes to his gut feelings. Not too long later Bryans mom asked him where his car was. This was the “Oh no…” moment that turned that gut feeling into a reality. Something bad did happen.
When we went outside, sure enough his car was gone. Their was no broken glass, and we had locked up the car the night before and his keys were in his pocket. We could not believe it, why the hell would somebody steal our car? It is not even a nice car! An old ’97 Honda Del Sol with only primer on it. Then something clicked in my head… “These thugs think because we live in a nicer neighborhood, we can afford to get a new car.”
Bull.Shit.
You know how much money we had in the bank that morning? Barely enough to cover towing and you know what? Now we had no money for our dinner plans, thanks a lot jerk! Bryans car is loud, and he swears he did not hear it being driven away because he was so knocked out by the NyQuil. Well, what price do we have to pay for a good nights rest while being sick?
We called the police and the car had already been found, on the North side of our city. The most ghetto part where all the gang bangers hang out and drink beers out of a paper bag. Yeah, those kinds of people. (Yeah, this is harsh. Deal with it. When your car is stolen by some gangsters and parked on the most dangerous part of town you’d be pissed too.)
When we got to our car – which was a good 15 minute drive away from our house – the cop was waiting there. Yeah, she was nice but she honestly did not give a flying fuck about us. They refused to try and get prints off of our car. They dissembled almost everything, there had to be some evidence there. And this is not the first time the cops have not cared about us civilians, about a year ago my car would get vandalized almost every night. They had these people on video and refused to do anything about it.
Here is the real question… Is Grand Theft Auto all of a sudden legal because our cops in VISALIA, CALIFORNIA are to god damn LAZY to do their job and find the criminal that stole our vehicle and rendered it undriveable?
They took everything from our car, speakers.. center console, stereo, my husbands zippo I bought him for his birthday, and our spedometer panel. Seriously?
Thats All. Here are some pictures of our car, yeah it was a mess.

OMG thats horrible. I am so sorry that happened to you
I can’t believe they refused to take prints. Thats crazy.
and all of that on a NyQuil morning… I hate that stuff I literally halucinate on that stuff I don’t know how you & Bryan handled all you had to I guess it sayes something for your youthfulness….
I’m so sorry about your car. Hopefully something can be done..
Jeez, that’s terrible, and yeah, cops don’t do very much. One of my exes lives out past Ivanhoe (his family farms out there) and they’ve had stolen cars set on fire in their orchards and stuff, and had some of their stuff ruined from it too, and the cops in general did nothing. It’s pretty ridiculous.
oh wow – I’m so sorry this happened. Scary and crappy all at the same time.
You know, I don’t think that police around here take fingerprints for this kind of stuff either. I think they do for home burglaries/invasions but I honestly don’t think they have the manpower to do it on stolen cars? Unless maybe they’re trying to break up a big ring or something? I could be wrong on that. I tend to watch too much tv.
Sweetie, I understand how angry you are, believe me, I would be too. But the truth is, very rarely are prints taken from a crime like this. Fingerprinting takes time and money that doesn’t justify the end result. That and most police departments don’t have the manpower to fully investigate this type of crime when much worse is happening. Most investigators have more on their desk than they have enough hours in the day to work on.
It really disappoints me to see some of these comments and how little respect people have for police officers. The stereotypes here just astound me.
I understand your point of view. But there is a fine line between man power and laziness. Like when my car was severely vandelized and suran wrapped to a light post and the cops found the two men on a security camera at the local super market and had their identities and did nothing. The line was crossed with this police station.
There are plenty of great cops, a good family friend is a police man for the city and says there is hardly enough work to keep them busy. And that most orders to not do everything they can come from the higher up officers. What are they going to do? Disobey?
That is just not right. The police our supposed to do everything possible to uphold the law. The ones on duty that day must have been having a lazy day (I sure hope the whole department isn’t like that). Sorry this happened to you.
I’m so sorry this happened to you! I can not believe that the police aren’t doing anything. Obviously the car was stolen… so find the criminal! They won’t do anything until someone steals a cop car, only then is it illegal!
Exactly! Cops to not care unless it is an inconvenience to them.
Wow! That totally sucks! My Dad’s car was stolen from in front of our house last year.. The VPD didn’t do anything, even when the car was found (not by them btw) they didn’t do a proper investigation.. I mean, the car was fully covered under insurance but still, people who steal and damage people’s lives should be held accountable.. but I guess the police have better things to do then protect the citizens of Visalia and their personal property against these “gangsters” and other losers..
Exactly what I am talking about! This is proof that I am not the only person it has happened to. These “protectors” need to get their motives set straight.
That’s horrible!! I hope that they find the guy{s} that did that to your car. The message that they are sending to car thieves is one of silent approval. That is NOT acceptable.
Thank you! You read my mind! This “silent seal of approval” is NOT okay any more.
That’s terrible..I’m so sorry this happened! This recently happened to my brother as well and they also refused to take prints. It’s Bullshit!
Hope things start to look up for you!
Thank you! I’m sorry to hear about your brother. It seems like the cops do not care unless somebody of importance (government officials, doctors…ect) get their property taken from them.
