Precious Depressed Me
Last night my husband and I watched Precious- the movie about the young girl in Harlem.

Let me start off by saying this moving is so completely jacked up- it made me feel torn apart inside. Who lives like that?
This movie is something I am never going to forget, seeing all of these things that young girls go through while growing up in Harlem is completely outrageous. This movie alone portrays incest, being a teen mother twice before your 17th birthday, rape, physical and emotional abuse, and HIV.
Could you imagine living a reality as cold as that before you have had your first boyfriend? Before you are even a legal adult? I know I would never have been able to handle that. I also feel that not enough is done about the children suffering there… with no help.
I have realized that all of the things I have complained about and gone through are so minimal. How did I ever think I would be taken seriously as a teen saying “My life sucks so bad.”
I am pathetic.
And I think I need to stay away from these kinds of movies, I hate feeling like I have been heart broken by a movie. Who wants that?
It just proves I am soft from an easy life, my skin is not thick enough for that kind of reality.
And that reality sickens me.

I just watched this the other night and I agree with you…I could not even imagine what that girl went through…It is all the fears I have for my children wrapped in one movie..With one girl…It really does leave a sick feeling in your stomach.
Well as a teen it is as good of a time as any to let them be exposed to horrible foul language. Seriously better than waiting for them to be exposed to it alone in a real life day to day situation.
I have no kids yet but my parents never censored the movies we watched. We did have to talk about the later.
They were always a good way to create dialogue and helped me prepare for some adult situations I found myself in later.

Do you think this would be a good movie for a suburban teen that has the good life?
I know it is based on a true story; possibly showing a kid, that just does not get how great their life really is, this movie may give them a wake up call.

I think that if you would not mind your teen watching a movie that is literally “F*** This, F*** That, F*** you” then it would be a great movie to watch.
It was just shocking to see how foul the language was in Precious. But I think it would definitely get a point across- most teens do not have it that bad.
I think you should watch the movie first just to make sure you are okay with your teen seeing it.
But you are right, it would deliver a wake up call – 100% guaranteed.
Thanks for your honest review. I haven’t seen it yet, but will know not to watch it on a mopey day. Following you now from MomDot. If you would like to return the follow, you can find me at http://ladyvdzine.com
