Secrets Girls Keep review

I have spent the last few days reading the book “Secrets Girls Keep” by Carrie Silver-Stock. I was touched from the beginning. This book brings out a lot of things to the open that some young girls have a problem confronting. I know I could have used a book like this during my high school years. This woman is a very inspiring person, and even though I am not a school aged girl anymore this book helped me move on from things that have been hurting me.

secretsgirlskeepWhat I love most about this book was that it was real, the author brought many different opinions to the table from girls just like I used to be (And how she used to be, as a struggling teen.) When I was in school (I hate to bring this up, but it is extremely relevant) I was buried in girl drama. I constantly has rumors being spread about me, and people threatening to jump me. It put me in a really horrible place, there were times when I did not want to do anything but lay in bed and sleep all day. Depression hit me hard. And I know if I would have had this book back then it would have really helped me.

Every chapter of the book covers the same “7 Tips Every Girl Needs to Deal with Any Problem.” (I love this, and have personally adopted these steps over the last few days I have been reading this book.

Here are the steps, they work wonders. (Coming from a mother who deals with problem after problem daily)

7 Tips Every Girl Needs to Deal with Any Problem.

1. You gotta use your gut
2. Discover your strengths and use them
3. Choose the right friends and respect them
4. Be courageous and confident
5. Be fit and stay fit
6. Dream big
7. Get outside of yourself

The book touches on every problem I have ever known a teen girl to encounter, such as sexuality, low self esteem addiction and suicide. The author had a way to word things that made it all click in my head. Why let yourself suffer because of others and what they think? Don’t! Be who you are and never let your inner beauty be destroyed because somebody else does not think you are good enough.

I think every mother with a tween to teen aged daughter should buy this book, and two copies of it. Because things most likely are not the way they were back when you were school aged. It will give you a peek into the every day life of a teenager and show you the things that they all go through.

Also, do not take this for granted. It may seen like a petty thing for your daughter to get upset over, but when you are in school and you have a million things building pressure on you, the last thing you need is somebody making you feel insecure about your body, or your way of doing things.

This is a great book for any girl, and their mother (who probably wouldn’t understand otherwise, right girls?!)

I don’t even want to think back to when I was a teen! And yes, thing shave changed a lot since then, but the problems are pretty much the same. You are either popular or you aren’t. You have to have the right clothes, etc. Things that don’t matter at all, but means the world to teens!
